Phrasing Questions

In English, we have our basic question words: who, what, when, where, why and how. In German, they translate to: wer, was, wenn, wo, warum, and wie.

When creating a question, it is formed similarly to the English way. We start with the question word, then the verb, then the subject, and then the rest of the sentence details.

Example:
Where am I? Who are you?
Wo bin ich? Wer bist du?

There are some other question words that get more specific: wieviel(how much), wieviele(how many), wie lange(how long), wohin(where to), woher(where from).

In addition to using the question words, you can ask a question using verbs. This time, you place the verb first and then the subject.

Example:
Do you play soccer?
Spielst du Fussball?

The verb must be conjugated to fit the subject. For rules on conjugation, click here!
